BALI 2015 award articleA garden in Sevenoaks, Kent

This Andy Sturgeon designed garden needed to tie a new modern swimming pool building into an existing older character property. This contemporary design incorporates a new Alitex greenhouse, a hardwood decking area, firepit evening area, mature planting and a full remote controlled lighting system.

Judges’ comments: “The Andy Sturgeon design for the garden of this lovely traditional home has been faultlessly executed by the contractor who had to work with a number of different materials to achieve the desired effect. Soft, subtle grasses enhance an area of decking on which all fixings have been beautifully aligned. The intricately paved flooring of the large and impressive glasshouse cum conservatory has been exquisitely laid by the contractor and resin-bound aggregate has been used for pathways through the garden. All materials had to be off-loaded in a local car park before being transferred to the property, which provided the contractor with an additional challenge. This is a lovely scheme and the owners are delighted.”

Modern gardens to inspire you

Created by garden designer and TV presenter Andy Sturgeon and built by Linden Landscapes, this scheme had to complement a large, contemporary new-build in Cranbrook, Kent.

The rendered, curved walls of the garden were inspired by the central tower of the house, as were the mixed glacial boulders. Hardwood decking was laid all round the house and the turfed area was bounded by prairie-style planting to give year-round, low maintenance interest.

“The end result is a garden that has allowed the house to blend in more sympathetically with its surroundings as it has matured,” says Linden Landscapes’ managing director, Mick Callahan.
